Tapa on strateegiline raudteesõlm ja militaarajalooga tasandikuline linn Põhja-Eesti ja Kesk-Eesti piiril. Tänu tihedale rongiühendusele ulatub linna mõjusfäär hõlpsalt naaberasulateni nagu Paide, Türi, Raasiku, Kuusalu ja Maardu.
